Hugh Morris
Young Composer

Hugh Morris is a composer, writer and musician based in Manchester. Originally from County Durham, he grew up playing in brass bands and choirs before moving to Manchester for further study. Hugh’s compositions blend of techniques and ideas from across a range of styles. Recent performances include premieres from members of London Sinfonietta, Red Note Ensemble & Devon Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as two operas (Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera / Vonnegut Collective & OperaHarmony) and a new song cycle for the tenor Zahid Siddiqui. His tuba quartet ‘Ruminate’ will be recorded in early 2021.

Aside from composing, Hugh is a writer on music, culture and politics. He has written for The Independent, GRAMMY, Jazzwise, TEMPO New Music, The Sampler, The Calvert Journal, The Big Issue, Bachtrack and many others. He balances freelance music writing with work for two independent jazz labels and a music charity. Hugh also sings with Kantos Chamber Choir and deputises at Manchester and Bradford Cathedrals. He’s delighted to be back at Ludlow English Song Weekend in 2021 and is excited to be collaborating with the wonderful Clare Best once again.
